Woodwise is a custom cabinet and millwork company located in
Woodsboro, Maryland, and is run by a lacrosse player of forty-four
years. We fabricate and finish our wooden lacrosse shafts with the
same care and techniques we use in building custom cabinetry and
millwork.
Hand Crafted Lacrosse Sticks
Sticks
All
lumber used in the shafts is selected from FAS grade hardwoods and thus is
the highest caliber available. While wood shafts are a little heavier than
the metal shafts predominately used today they offer a
more solid feel.
A short stick averages just 1½ ounce more than a Warrior Krypto™ while the
defensive poles are three ounces heavier.
Woodwise offers shafts in Solid, Three Ply
and Five Ply.
designs that are available using
Jatoba (50% harder than Hickory), White Ash, Hard Maple, Red Oak, Walnut,
and other exotic hardwoods.
Construction
Process
Solid shafts are selected for straight grain, which
maximizes the strength of the shaft.
Three and Five Ply shafts are manufactured by laminating
milled strips with an exterior wood adhesive. The blanks are clamped under
pressure for a period of twenty-four hours before the milling process
begins. All blanks then have one face and one edge milled on a jointer for
straightness. The blanks are then sized using a wide belt sander before
they are run through the moulder to produce the final octagonal shape of
modern shafts.
The next process is the hand sanding of each shaft with
120 grit sand paper prior to finishing. The sticks are then finished with
exterior penetrating oil.
Woodwise carries an inventory of pre-fabricated shafts in
all styles.
